SOUTH BOSTON — A number of Medal of Honor recipients were on hand for the rededication ceremony for the South Boston Vietnam Memorial to mark the monument’s 40th anniversary. Before the events in Medal of Honor Park in South Boston on Sunday, a memorial Mass was said at St. Brigid Church.
“I’m thankful that this great country entrusted me with this medal. I wear it for the great Marines and those phenomenal Navy corpsmen that 56 years ago, I got to lead on the field of battle,” said Medal of Honor recipient and U.S. Marine Corps Col. Barney Barnum. The South Boston Vietnam Memorial features the names of the 25 men from South Boston who were killed in action during the Vietnam War. Among those in attendance were the families of those 25 men, along with local and state dignitaries.
