PHOTO BY BILL BRETT SOUTH BOSTON — For those of you who are complaining that it is too hot, too humid, too muggy… We just want to point out that Bill Brett took this photograph off the shore near L Street Beach on New Year’s Day. The air temperature was so cold that the heat (yes, relatively, that is) from the water was causing the “smoke” to rise from the water.
NEEDHAM — A segment on the award-winning television magazine show “Chronicle” about our own Bill Brett and his fifth book, “Boston: Irish” was re-aired on the show recently. The segment also gives an exclusive sneak peek of the cover of “Boston: Game Changers,” Bill’s latest book, which is expected to be released this fall. (Just in time for Christmas!) NANTUCKET SOUND — Bill Brett was on the ferry from Nantucket to the Cape when the boat got an announcement that it was a woman’s birthday. A rendition of “Happy Birthday” followed soon after. Bill, who was traveling back from covering the Ireland Funds Nantucket Celebration, was seated next to Tom Sexton, a Boston-based bagpiper who had performed at the Ireland Funds event. PHOTO BY BILL BRETT BOSTON — Watching the live press conference of Boston Police Department announcements of the retirement of Bill Evans and Mayor Marty Walsh’s appointment of William G. Gross as the new commissioner. I couldn’t be more thrilled. Gross, as he said in the press conference, is a true street cop who started on the streets in Dorchester. Our city is lucky to have all three of these men. — Bill
HANOVER — Thousands turned out on Thursday to pay their respects to fallen Weymouth Police Officer Sgt. Michael C. Chesna, whose wake was held at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church in Hanover. Father Christopher Hickey, who once studied to be in law enforcement, will say the funeral Mass this morning at the church. All photos by Bill Brett
