DORCHESTER — More than 200 guests gathered for the 12th annual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast and raised more than $100,000 to support the Mary Ann Brett Food Pantry. The breakfast, hosted by the Brett family, is held in the church hall of St. Teresa’s of Calcutta church.
The breakfast also is the induction ceremony into the Dorchester Hall of Fame. This year’s ceremony celebrated four new inductees: Fire Commissioner Joe Finn, Sister Barbara Gorham of Sisters of Charity Halifax, Bob Marr representing the Marr Family, and Governor Charlie Baker. Baker’s induction was a surprise, with his name on the plaque covered by a piece of paper until emcee James T. Brett, CEO of the New England Council, announced the addition to the program.
Several current and former officials spoke at the light-hearted event, according the The Dorchester Reporter account. Mayor Martin Walsh joked about being in his home parish by welcoming everyone to “St. Margaret’s church,” as the site was known until 2004.
He added. “The money that’s raised here today helps the food pantry all year long,” he said, according to the Reporter. “This breakfast can help someone in need in July.”
Brett closed the event by invoking a sentiment that summed up the memory of his mother and the mission of the food pantry. “We cannot forget our neighbors,” he said. “That’s what this is all about.”
