McCourt Foundation announces new plan to use LA Marathon to fund charity

BOSTON — More than 350 guests celebrated on May 10, 2019 at The McCourt Foundation’s annual gala at the Boston Harbor Hotel, which raised more than $200,000.

At the event, the Braintree-based foundation announced that the McCourt family was converting the for-profit business overseeing the Los Angeles Marathon into a nonprofit organization that will raise money to expand its charitable efforts, which today center on neurological research. The money will be distributed via the Foundation.

According to The Boston Globe, the Foundation has about $1 million today. The new funds will be used to scale to expand its charity well beyond Greater Boston.

Frank McCourt, who formerly owned parcels in South Boston’s Seaport District and the Los Angeles Dodgers, bought the Los Angeles Marathon in 2008 and and later remapped the 26.2-mile course. Like Boston, the LA Marathon hits the streets in a point-to-point course that takes the 20,000-plus runners now wind their way from the baseball stadium to the sea, ending in Santa Monica.

The McCourt Foundation raised more than $700,000 last year, primarily for neurological research at Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s hospitals.
