SOUTH BOSTON — 500 guests attended the Gavin Foundation’s annual Road to Recovery gala, which was held at the Boston Design Center. Among those in attendance were the Foundation’s “Man of the Year” from 2017 Gov. Charlie Baker, Congressman Steve Lynch, and this year’s Caring Hearts Award honoree Karen Van Winkle, according to the Foundation’s CEO John McGahan. All photos by Bill Brett

BRAINTREE — More than 3,000 people took part in the annual Run for Charlotte, which raises money to provide financial assistance to families facing pediatric cancers. The participants did either a 10K or 5K run, or a 5K walk in Braintree. The race is named for Charlotte Kelly, who was 5 years old when she died in 2011 from neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily strikes children and infants.
