WEYMOUTH — The town of Weymouth holds the distinction of being the only town in the country to be home to five Medal of Honor recipients and the community came together this Memorial Day to honor those who served their country with distinction. The award is the highest military decoration in the United States.
The service of the five men, long a source of pride in this South Shore community, was further recognized when the community unveiled five statues dedicated to its Medal of Honor recipients on Memorial Day: Chief Quartermaster Thomas W. Hamilton, Pvt. Elden H. Johnson, Pfc. Frederick C. Murphy, Lt. William Seach, and 2nd Lt. Ralph Talbot. Weymouth has named an elementary school for each man. The statues stand at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater next to town hall. (The amphitheater is home to Veterans Memorial Wall, which bears thousands of bronze plaques with the names of Weymouth residents who served in the military during a time of conflict.)
