SOUTH BOSTON — The air temperature was about 1 degree above zero when 200 people plunged into Boston Harbor at M Street Beach in South Boston for the annual L Street Brownies New Year’s Day polar swim. Water temperature was 44 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The Jan. 1st swim, one of the country’s oldest such charity events, has been held annually for 115 years. In 2017, about 500 people took the plunge as the weather was less severe.
