BOSTON — Our colleague Sean Goss packed his camera and headed to Boston for the evening protest march, the third one held in Boston on Sunday.
The day’s marches were held to protest the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and for other instances where a Black person was killed by police. As you can seen in Sean’s photos, the day was a peaceful and powerful one, but when the sun went down and the official event was over just before the city’s coronavirus curfew things got tense in downtown and the Back Bay.
By early Monday morning, numerous businesses had been looted, including a store that sells high end winter jackets at the Mass. Avenue end of Newbury Street. According to the Boston Police Department, 53 people, ranging in age from 17 to 45, were arrested, including 27 from Boston. Nine police officers were taken to area hospitals for treatment, while scores more were treated by emergency crews in the field. Eighteen civilians were taken by Boston Emergency Medical Service crews to area hospitals.
During the evening march, Sean spotted whole families marching together, people with their dogs, and a woman who baked cookies to give to marchers. (Sean says they were good cookies.)
